PRATEEK SURI
Founder of Maser’s Group, Leader of MDR Investments, and Author of Gateway to Africa, the memoir of an entrepreneur who transformed Africa’s tech market.
GATEWAY TO AFRICA
Gateway to Africa is a personal account of Prateek Suri and his journey through entrepreneurship, uncertainty, and the unexpected opportunities that eventually led him to Africa. The book reflects not only on business, but also on resilience, timing, relationships, and the experiences that shape a person over time.
Raised in South New Delhi, Suri began his entrepreneurial journey with limited resources but with a strong determination to build something meaningful. During those early years, long before success or recognition, he once casually told a few close friends that someday he would write a book about his experiences. At the time, it was simply a passing thought shared during difficult moments, without knowing how deeply those experiences would later shape his life.
The book traces the realities of building a business from the ground up — the uncertainty, setbacks, and personal struggles that often remain unseen behind entrepreneurship. At one stage, while facing financial pressure and debt in India, Suri experienced moments of isolation where even calls for help went unanswered. Those difficult periods became defining chapters in his life, teaching him lessons about perseverance, trust, and the importance of continuing forward despite setbacks.
A major turning point came through an event that was never part of the original plan. A shipment intended for the Indian market was unexpectedly diverted to Dubai due to circumstances at the time. From Dubai, the products were later re-exported into African markets, where demand began to grow rapidly. What initially seemed like a setback gradually became the opportunity that changed the direction of his business journey and introduced him to Africa’s vast potential. That accidental shipment became the true beginning of Gateway to Africa.
The book follows the growth of Maser across African markets and the challenges that came with expanding into unfamiliar territories. From navigating currency volatility and supply-chain difficulties to understanding local business cultures and market realities, the journey was shaped by continuous learning and adaptation. Alongside the successes, the book also shares honest experiences about mistakes, misjudgments, and lessons learned along the way.
More importantly, Gateway to Africa offers practical insight for entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders who wish to understand Africa beyond headlines and assumptions. Through real experiences, the book highlights both what to do — and what not to do — while building businesses across the continent. It reflects on the importance of patience, local partnerships, cultural understanding, long-term thinking, and risk management when operating in emerging markets.
ABOUT PRATEEK SURI
Prateek Suri is an entrepreneur, investor, and the Chairman of Maser Group. Born in Delhi, India, he is a graduate of BITS Pilani and a former student of Modern School Barakhamba Road. He is also the author of Gateway to Africa.
As the CEO of MDR Investments, Prateek focuses on large-capital ventures across Africa, with interests spanning infrastructure, artificial intelligence, mining, logistics, and real estate. His work is driven by a long-term vision of building impactful businesses across emerging markets.
Beyond boardrooms, Prateek is deeply connected to philanthropy through Maser Foundation, which he describes as something that changed the meaning of life for him. He often reflects on childhood memories of his mother taking him to blind schools and charity centers—places he once hesitated to visit, but later understood were shaping his values, compassion, and sense of purpose.
As Prateek says, “When I was young, I used to tell my friends that one day I would do something meaningful in life. Some encouraged me, while others laughed at the dream. Today, through my journey and my book, I want people to understand that if I could build something from nothing, then anyone with belief, courage, and persistence can do it too. You do not always need money to begin—sometimes all you need is vision, hunger, and the courage to take the first step.”
